Mangos
y Cerveza

The
inspiration for this piece came straight out the mouth of a lovely Canadian
lad who vacationed in
Central America every year. I’ll use the past
tense for this story although it may be that he shows up again tomorrow…
such is his nature. He was a true hedonist in search of all earthly
pleasures one can imagine and thought that the tropics was an easy place to
come by them, at least, easier for him than in a tree in Canada (his job was
forestry which kept him pretty isolated). According to the town history he
appears to have been extremely successful.
One
day I asked him to give me a sentence that summed this place up for him.
After a few minutes he said, "Ummm, fresh mangos in the shower." Then a
few minutes later he added, "mangos and beer."
Maybe because he was a man of a few words, and that phrase was so succinct,
it stuck in my mind and I painted it.
The
result is this image which is a combination of dynamism (a style I enjoy)
and egg tempera, a lovely medium, and one crazy Canadian’s take on his
vacation. |
