In The Kitchen

I’ve
done a series of paintings that fall under the age old category of “still
life”. In Guatemala they have the unique way of calling them "Naturaleza
Muerta" which means “dead nature”. I find that a peculiarly disturbing
description, but that’s how it is said.
I
always thought the kitchen was a natural place to set them up because it’s
always full of fruits or vegetables, usually a vase of flowers and whatever
else happens to be on the table at the time.
Last
September the Pope made a visit to our town to canonize a local priest (long
dead) named Hermano Pedro. I thought it would be fun to play on that so I
put together this still life which is titled "In the kitchen with Brother
Dog"… Hermano Perro being brother dog. Everything you see in the painting
was actually in the kitchen… fixings for dinner, the flowers, the candle,
and the wooden hand painted dog from Nahuala. I gave the dog the halo.
Welcome to a little piece of folk art and a little piece of one of my
dinners. Enjoy! |
