PAGANISM!!!

This
(Guatemala) is
supposedly a Catholic country. However some ideas die hard. Here are two
pieces about someone the locals worship diligently.
San
Simon, or St. Simon, has been around these parts for several hundred
years. They’ve created a life size mannequin of him and his shrine is set
in San Andrés Iztapa. There he has a building and plenty of brujas
(witches) in case you want to be cleansed. You worship him with liquor,
cigarettes or cigars, candles and money. According to Urban Legend, he has
cured or saved millions of people. Currently he is dressed in a black suit
and hat and looks like the first piece… which is a silkscreen based on a
monoprint. Were you to own this image, treat it well, because if you don’t,
rumor has it he will bring ruin to your life.
The
other, Maximón, is based in Santiago Atitlán and he is the Indian version of
the same idol. The story behind him is a little different but the following
is huge! And the same holds true… treat him with respect.
Let
it be said that the local people seem to cover all their bases.
If
you want more information about these GUYS… please ask! The story behind
them is huge! |
